Hill Of A Climb Bike Race

The first annual Hill Of A Climb Bike Race will take place this year as part of Mountain Day in Buena Vista on Saturday, October 10th.

The Hill of a Climb will be a time trial race up Robinson Gap Road in Buena Vista Virginia with each contestant starting with a one minute stagger.  There will be $1000 in prizes, split 6 ways. There will be money and awards for the first 3 places in men and women over 40 years of age and the first 3 places for men and women under 40. First place in each category will be $125, second will be $75 and third will be $50. There will be pizza and drinks afterwards. I hope for the awards to be something practical (example: a flask or plate) instead of the usual trophy type prizes.

All participants receive a cool Hill of a Climb T-shirt. The majority of your entrance fee will be donated to the United Way for the Rockbridge Occupational Center. To learn more about the center go to: http://www.raoc.org/Home.html

The climb is approximately 4.8 miles. The first half mile is on asphalt the rest is on hard packed dirt with some gravel. Street, mountain and hybrid bikes can all enter. If you use a street bike you might consider a wider tire. There will be traffic on this road (There is rarely more than 4 or 5 cars on this road per hour.) so all the rules of the road apply. You must stay on the right side of the road during the entire race; no cutting corners.  Riders after finishing their run have the option of returning by coming down Robinson Gap Road or taking the Blue Ridge Parkway north to Route 60. The Blue Ridge Parkway can be accessed at the finish line. It is 5 miles north on the parkway to route 60 which will bring you back down to Buena Vista and Route 501.

The start of the race will be at the intersection of Hazel Ave. and Bradford Drive just below Parry McCluer High School in Buena Vista. Parking will be in the high school parking lot at the top of Bradford Drive. The High School is allowing contestants to use the locker rooms and showers.

DIRECTIONS to Parry McCluer High School and the intersection of Hazel Ave and Bradford Drive:

From either I-81 North or South take exit 188A to Route 60 and Buena Vista. Follow Route 60 to Route 501 (the first light you come to in Buena Vista) Take a right on 501 and go to 9th street and take a left onto 9th. Follow the bend at the end of 9th around to the right, the school will be about a ¼ mile after the bend in the road (9th changes into Hazel Ave.)

If you come down Route 60 from the Blue Ridge Parkway take a left at route 501 and follow the same directions above to 9th Street.
